The infusion of the plant is astringent and is used as a wash to prevent hair from falling out and to stop the gums from bleeding. The fresh root is reported to be massaged directly into the gums (Bye 1986;Gonz~lez F. 1979; Villarreal and Dominguez 1988; Vines 1960).
